Central Library


The Karnatak University Library was established in 1950 along with the university on a small hall of Government Training College for men. Now it has independent building located behind "Gandhi Bhavan" surrounded by beautiful natural greenery. The building has a carpet area of 4030 sq. mtrs. It accommodates about 4 lakhs books in its four stack rooms and around 300 students at a time to read in the reading halls of the library.

Library also provides reading facility for physically challenged student. A reading room near the entrance hall of library specially available for physically challenged users.

Organization of Collection:

In order to have smooth and easy access to library collection, books are organized according to subject and Colon Classification (scheme) has been used for arranging the books.

A good collection of CD-ROMs in various subjects is also available for is also available for access. Library subscribes around 400 Research Journals in print and 5000 in Electronic form through UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium and also it has back volumes of periodicals, Reports, Theses and Dissertations submitted to Karnatak University. One of the special features of this library is United Nations Depository and World Public Information KIOSK which is having more than 30,000 documents.

Monday to Friday
For reference: 08:00 a.m. TO 08:00 p.m.
Issue/Return of books: 08:00 a.m. TO 08:00 p.m.

Saturday: 10:30 a.m. TO 06:00 p.m.

Books lending service (Books borrowing facility)
- By becoming member of the library
- Two borrow cards per students will be issued.
- For this Students have to deposit Rs. 200 each card.
- For SC/ST/category I Student we are providing extra one card, they can borrow 3 books.
- Period of lending 10 days
- Rs. 1 fine per day for delay in return of books.

Open access facility - Library is practicing Open access facility. You are free to choose any book.
Photocopying service – For the benefit of users library is providing Xerox facility in the library premises only.
Reference service - Library is having very rich collection of reference material in all the disciplines.
Inter library loan facility - Library is also collects books from other university in the country. If any user wants books from other university they can approach library.
Internet browsing service – Library provides internet access service for students. 2mbps high-speed internet connectivity over campus Local Area Network is available Users can make use of this facility to by paying nominal fees of Rs. 5/- per hour.
UGC Info net E-Journals access facility - Library subscribes more than 5000 electronic journals in different disciplines through UGC-INFONET Electronic Journals consortium. User can access full text of all these journals.
Cataloguing service - In addition to the manual catalogue library also provide Online Public access catalogue(OPAC) Services which contains 3 lakhs records are available for reference. OPAC is also available on Campus LAN. User can search the books through Author, Title and subject using Boolean logic AND OR & NOT
User education. Library also provide user education program. For new user our staff is ready to provide user education.

Ugc-Infonet E-Journals Consortium:

Karnatak University Library with help of UGC-INFLIBNET, has established 1 Gbps Internet connectivity. With this University has paved into new Information Technology Super Highway. Now it is possible to access high speed Internet in the campus.
It is possible to access 5000 more than full text electronic journals in various subjects through UGC-INFONET. These Electronic Journals are very useful to faculty, researchers and students.
