Kannada was one of the four Departments then established. In recognition of the services of Dr. R.C. Hiremath the Department was later named after him. This Institute engaged in teaching, research and publication activities. Publications include project works, special lectures, translations and University Journals, namely Karnataka Bharathi and Vidyarthi Bharathi, the latter especially meant for student-writers.
