The department was established in 1954. The Department has paid particular attention
to the systematic exploration of mineral and metal resources. Contribution to the
study of Precambrians of Karnataka since its early days have laid a solid foundation
for promoting earth science education. The Department has blossomed into a prestigious
center for Earth Science Studies and Research in the country. The Department has
excellent facilities for teaching and research.

Vision
To impart geoscience education to meet the economic development of the region and
train technical manpower that can harness natural resources – oil and natural gas,
groundwater and conservation of non-renewable energy resources.
Mission
To impart applied knowledge and training to students to be able to generate technical
skill and manpower to cater to the needs of exploratory and mining industries. To
promote interdisciplinary research in collaboration with national and international
institutions and the mining industries.
