The Department was established in 1951 in Karnatak Science College, Dharwad and
shifted to an independent building in the university campus in the year 1966. The
department offers general courses in Botany, such as Plant Systematics, Cryptogamic
Botany, Mycology, Anatomy, Cell Biology, Plant Breeding and Plant Physiology etc.
Subsequently several new papers have been introduced like Microbiology, Plant Pathology,
Developmental Biology Biophysics, Biostatistics and Computer Application etc. The
department has received many research projects from various funding agencies like
UGC, DST and CSIR. Faculty have collaborative research work with international research
institutions in South Korea, UK and USA
To develop the department as a Premier Centre of Teaching and Research in Plant
To provide higher education and high quality research in plant science. To encourage
students to take up higher studies in plant science as their career. To provide
ample opportunities for students and scholars to get themselves exposed with the
current advancements in the field of plant science. To assist and collaborate with
NGO’S and forest department officials to carryout need based research in plant sciences.
To devise strategies for the sustainable utilization and conservation of phytodiversity.
